Atomic Bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
in August 1945.


In August 1945, two atomic bombs were dropped respectively in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These bombs had impacts on the lives of people in these two cities and housing and properties were lost.

​​76 years after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings: Are we on track to peaceful world?

Background
The year 2021 falls on the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as they were dropped on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively.
The Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Treaty review discussion was supposed to be organised in New York last year, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force in January this year.

Organising Committee

​A group of staff members of the United Nations, the UN specialized agencies, the international organisations gathered and formed an organizing committee for atomic bomb exhibitions in Nairobi.  As part of its activity, the committee organised physical poster exhibitions recent years. The committee’s activities have been supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) and United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat).  Last year, the Committee organised its first virtual; poster exhibition on the web and two associated events were also organised. Again, due to the COVID19 crisis, this year it will a virtual poster exhibition.  This year’s theme is “76 years after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings: Are we on track to peaceful world?”.
